AI Visibility

Nobody Is Looking for You: The difference between brand visibility and discoverability — and how AI search is changing the way audiences find you.

Any therapist will tell you the deepest human need is to be seen and heard. If you are one of those kids who started a business because you didn't get enough attention, welcome. We saved you a seat.

The good news is that businesses have never had more ways to be seen. They publish on social, send newsletters, invest in photography and video, pitch press, tune their websites and maintain a channel count that keeps quietly growing.

The question underneath all of that activity is a harder one to answer with a content calendar: can the right person actually find you at the moment they need what you sell?

Visibility is something a business manufactures. Somebody approves a budget, and six weeks later the campaign goes live on a Tuesday because the deck said…Tuesday.

Discoverability belongs to the person doing the looking. Discoverability is your ability to surface when a prospective customer is actively searching for an answer, recommendation, experience or solution. Someone wants an answer or a recommendation, goes looking for it, and your business turns up in the set of options they take seriously.

Search stopped happening in one place

People now move between traditional search, AI-generated answers, editorial coverage, YouTube, social platforms and the group chat where they ask a friend who has actually been there.

In May 2026, Google published a dedicated guide to optimizing for generative AI features in Search, and it spends an entire section dismantling the acronyms. Generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization, pick your letters. Its generative AI features are rooted in the same core Search ranking and quality systems, pulling information from Google’s existing Search index.

What moves the needle is unique, non-commodity content that a person actually wants to read.

One useful detail buried in there: a single question can trigger several related retrievals behind the scenes, so the questions sitting adjacent to yours matter as much as the obvious one.

This certainly explains how a business can be enormously active online and remain rather hard to find.

A gorgeous hotel has 40,000 Instagram followers and endless sunset reels, and nothing that answers whether the corner rooms are worth the upgrade or how the property handles a big group over festive season. Somewhere a founder is giving away fifteen years of judgment on a client call right now, and not a word of it has ever been written down. The company down the street knows exactly what makes it different and has said so nowhere except in the copy it wrote about itself.

Publishing usually just makes those gaps bigger and better lit.

Build for the moment of consideration

Start with what the business should be known for, and then look honestly at whether its digital footprint supports that claim.

Which questions should it have the standing to answer? Most companies can name three of them immediately and haven’t published a single one. From there it gets even more uncomfortable. Who outside the company would vouch for it in a place a stranger would actually find, and where are prospective customers already comparing their options before anyone thinks to talk to you?

Answer those and your content starts working like infrastructure. One founder essay can work on search results and reputation at the same time. Editorial coverage adds something your own site cannot manufacture: independent validation, often with a valuable backlink left behind on the way out.The video you shoot once will still be answering a high-intent question years after the campaign budget closed.

Attention is easy to buy and easy to lose. The goal here is narrower: when the right person goes looking, your business has already earned a reason to appear, and then, a reason to be chosen.

The rest is between you and your therapist.
